Safety for Children
"My husband threatened to take the children back home to his country of origin. The staff at the Centre gave me the following information which was very helpful"
- Make photocopies of all the important documents, such as birth certificates, health cards, passports, immigration documents, bank information, court documents, etc. Keep them with a friend for safekeeping. See our Safe-T Bag page for a checklist.
- As soon as children are old enough, they should be taught to use the phone (land-line/cell/pay-phone). They should learn how to dial 911, get the operator and how to make a collect call.
- As soon as children are old enough teach them their full name and address.
- Alert the school/daycare staff about which people have permission to pick up your children.
- Give school/daycare staff a photograph of the abuser if that person is not allowed to pick up the children.
